Don't have an account with Alekese, yet? Register today!

Alekese saves time by remembering everything you've learned, but this only works for registered users. Non-registered users can still use the site to find good links, but they'll have to keep track of what they've learned themselves.

Although registering is easy (you don't even need an email address!), you're welcome to try out the site using our Demo user before creating an account of your own. Anyone can log in with the Demo user, but—be forewarned—this account is reset every hour, so any changes you make will be lost.

To check it out, do the following:

  1. Log in as "demo". The username and password both are "demo".

  2. On the Search for a skill page (or on the home page), search for "get a job" and press enter.

    Search for "get a job".
  3. In the search results, click on the [View X Trees] link to see a list of all of the Alekese Trees for this skill. (The top few Trees for this Skill are listed below the link; if you see what you're looking for, feel free to go directly to that Tree!)

  4. Now you'll see a list of Trees with "get a job" for the Goal Skill. Each Tree will have a list of prerequisite Skills that you'll need to learn to complete the Tree. (Prerequisite Skills that you already know will not be listed.) Scroll through the Trees shown, and find a Tree that looks good to you (hint: each Tree has a Graph. A thumbnail of the Graph is shown in the list. Look for trees with more green than gray; this indicates that the Tree is more complete).

  5. Click on one of the Trees

  6. On the View Tree page, you will see a full-sized version of the Tree's Graph. Each Graph is composed of Skills that need to be learned to complete the Tree.

    • Skills with green boxes have links to information about this skill.
    • Skills with gray boxes lack any extra information, probably because the Tree's author hasn't yet found or composed a tutorial to aid you in learning this skill.
    • If you are logged in (which you should be at this point), the Graph may also have blue and mustard Skills. Blue Skills are ones you've marked as already knowing.
    • Mustard Skills are ones that still have prerequisites you should learn beforehand.

Click on a Skill with a green box.

  7. You should see a list of one or more links that Alekese Users have added to the database and associated with the Skill in the box you clicked. Follow a link to see an article for that skill. When you're done, close the new tab or window to return to Alekese.

  8. Each link has one or more Skills associated with it. The primary Skill is marked with a star. Check off any skills you have learned when reading the article. If you didn't learn anything with this Link, don't check any Skills off. (Read more about Checkoff points.)

  9. Return to the Tree by clicking on the "Return to tree" link at the top of the page (or by clicking on the Back button in your browser).

Click "Return to Tree [...]" to return to the Tree!
  10. The Graph of the Tree should change so that the skill you have just learned will turn blue. This might have also turned new boxes green, indicating you are ready to learn them!

  11. Skills you learn and check off will not only show up as blue in this tree, but in any other tree you pursue too. You can try this out by checking off all the skills for the current tree and then returning to the tree listing page for "get a job" and pursuing a different tree. Many of the skills will already be blue!

  12. These features are only available to registered users, so register for an account! (Any Skills you check off as "learned" while logged-in as the demo user will be forgotten.)
